Learn how to assemble your instrument, care for it, and play your first note!

Here at Middle C Music, our investment in our customers doesn't end when they walk out the door. We know that learning a new instrument can be overwhelming, not only for the child but for the parents as well. We began uploading our "First Lesson Videos" as a way to introduce new students and their parents to the instruments. Videos cover information such as how to put the instrument together, how to clean and care for it, and how to play their first note.

With every rental this season, we've handed out a direct link to our lesson videos page, and the parent reaction has been universally enthusiastic! We hope that this helps band students begin their school year with more confidence.

So far, we have videos available for all the most popular school band instruments- flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. We hope to keep adding more videos, eventualy including first lessons for violin, drums, guitar, ukulele, piano, and voice. Keep checking in, or subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay up to date!

MyrnaMyrna Sislen is the owner of Middle C Music. In 2002, under the store’s previous owner, sales were slow and the store was within one week of closing. Then, local classical guitarist and George Washington University professor Myrna Sislen entered the picture.

It was a Thursday and she was working out at the health club across the street. Leaving her kick boxing class, Sislen ran into another local musician who mentioned that the store was closing. He said, ‘Do you know what she’s asking for it?’

It had never occurred to Sislen to ask. He told her the figure, and she thought “man, I could write a check for that- that’s not very much.” She signed the papers the following Friday.

Sislen’s goal was to make the store into a community—the Middle C Family. Twelve years later, it is more than that -- a draw for the region tucked into an office complex. Middle C Music now serves 400 students a week, 40 to 50 percent of whom are adults, and supports 20 teachers and numerous employees.

Over her twelve years as store owner, Myrna Sislen has doubled the size of the store, transforming Middle C Music into a comfortable, safe and nurturing neighborhood destination for musicians and music lovers of all stripes.
