Musings on scores and technology

The New Face of Print Music?

I had an interesting conversation with one of our regular customers last night. He had stopped in for a few volumes of the gorgeous Mendelssohn Complete Piano works published by Henle and as he was placing them into protective covers, he mentioned seeing Angela Hewitt play a concert from scores on an iPad.

I know a few performers personally who've used digital scores like this, but Angela Hewitt is the first big-name soloist I've heard of actually using this technology in performance. Now that I'm looking into it more, it seems like the iPad is gaining ground among a wide variety of performers. Specialty music stands and choir folders that fit iPads or other digital readers are making their way into my catalogs. As a purveyor of the printed page, it's a little unnerving.

Kid's Stuff

Recordings, books, and sheet music for kids or childish adults

Kid's Stuff

I always seem to have kids on my mind on Thursdays, probably because we have our children's classes in the morning and the store is full of three- year-olds with ukuleles. And then today we received an adorable story book about a sad low brass instrument named Tubby the Tuba. Plus, our percussion teacher usually brings her baby in for a visit before she teaches the kid's classes. All these kids get me thinking about how to...program? brainwash?...er, inspire kids to love music.

Here's a few of my favorites items for kids.

Music Picks from Sci-fi, Fantasy, and Video Games

Print Music for Nerds

With The Avengers topping box office charts, Game of Thrones half way through its second season, and symphony orchestras regularly programming video game concerts, there's never been a better time to be a nerd in America.

Ok, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration and maybe I'm grasping at straws, but I just discovered that there's a songbook for Firefly and I'm trying to justify my excitement with a blog entry.

Seriously though, nerd culture (of the video game/sci-fi/epic fantasy/comic book variety) is merging with mainstream culture in increasingly noticeable ways. Over the past few years that trend has shown up in music publishing as well. Saving me the trouble of putting my music degree to work and actually writing my own transcriptions.

In honor of all things nerdy (or geeky!), here's my top picks of sheet music your friends might mock you for buying:
